The role of the registered nurse (RN)
The nurse (RN) is probably the member of the care team who is closest to the patient.
The role of the RN may be that of a caregiver or one dedicated to ERP (thus forming the 3rd member of the Anaesthetist-Surgeon-Nurse trinomial leader).
The RN assumes a coordination role or a referring role.
The RN is involved in all the stages from management of the preoperative consultation (ideally a dedicated consultation) to the discharge of the patient, and even at their home if necessary (telephone call or electronic communication).
The ERP pathway is a multidisciplinary approach aimed at improving the well-being and empowering the patient by simplifying the care pathway at all levels and for all those involved.
The coordination role of the RN is ultimately to prove the usefulness of ERP for the patient and staff and, secondly, to demonstrate the advantages for the organisation.
